Myrkraverk is a solid Ritual Ambient album that goes far in creating that thick atmosphere that more or less drags you in all by its own. For meditation and especially those into a more shamanic school of thought this album have some golden tracks but for those looking for an Ambient album the tracks might feel a bit monotone and on the edge of too long. Personally I like this album for what it holds hidden beneath it’s slow pounding drums and brooding chants. There is more than meets the ear at work here and Draugurinn nails that eldritch feeling of being a doomed traveller of forbidden pathways through the underworld. I would highly recommend Myrkraverk to seekers of a more spiritual path and daddlers into the pagan mysteries of old, and it should appeal to individuals into Asatru as well. Ritual Pagan Ambient when it works well is truly wonderful...

VIII SANCTVAIRES is not a concept album. Its source lays into the proverb from Horace, "Laudator Tempori Acti": glorifying the past. Acts like 843 or Un Siecle plus tard concerns history of lorraine (division of Charlemagne's Kingdom, the great battle from Verdun). Other acts like Nocturne Morte, Loreina or Les Sequelles de la nuit are purely black poetry through mysticism like the legend of Icaros. Musically, those thems could only be transfigured in a mid tempo style, traditional and atmospheric. And to bring the symbolic of the band, the celestial flight from Alerion, a progressive touch seals the sanctuaries together.

...Moving into the latter half of the release and ‘Lost Northern Island (Lords of the Seas Part II) brings to mind such vivid imagery even before the track starts yet when it does kick in the catchy brand of aggressive bleak Black Metal on offer really gets the senses going. ‘Helluland’ is a rabble rousing anthem if Black Metal can ever have such a beast whilst the finale track of ‘The Ride To Valhalla’ (What else would it be?) is uplifting in a way Amon Amarth seem to do so effortlessly when singing about the Vikings. In truth it’s a great album and I’ve loved every moment and I strongly recommend you obtain it. (9/10 - DESTRUCTIVE MUSIC)

Mare di Dirac (Italy) is a project based on a dualistic structure which considers quantum mechanics as rational sphere and primitive rituals as instinctive sphere forming a union called "Cultus of Quantum" or "Quantum Rites".
The instruments used to achieve these rituals must belong to both spheres. They use sounds of old church organ or items with natural reverb combine to field recording microphones or short-wave receiver, mindful of uncertainty principle. We introduce you the sounds of there uncertain, void and unpredictable places.

Sickening twisted Black Metal that’s powered by torture vocals and desperate atmosphere.

The split lives up to its title with both bands infusing new blood into some of their unreleased and classic songs remixed that definitely, given the nature of both bands, represent their mystical and occult roots. Ophidian Forest reminds me of a blend of early Satyricon and a VERY raw Summoning on a superficial level. They first deliver the symphonic “Densest Green” , an 8-minute raspy vocals and blistering echoing power chords amidst a phantom mist. You can’t really get more old school black metal than “Densest Green”, “Fear Bloody Wings” , and “Verschwiegenheit”…this stuff will freeze your soul in an instant, especially the vocals on “Fear Bloody Wings” , which almost literally feel as though they are some paranormal sermon evaporating as spoken. There’s just this intangible texture to Ophidian Forest that is spectral and cold, AND beyond physicality. Although Ophidian Forest only contribute three out of thirteen songs on here, they still consume roughly 30 minutes of life as they suck out your soul leaving the mind and body in a limbo of confusion. Very pagan and Very ethereal stuff!!!!

Started as OPHIUCHUS somewhere in the nineties by Mories - mastermind of the crucially acclaimed ‘Gnaw Their Tongues’.
Inspired by nineties black metal, the aim was to combine black metal with more electronic/avant garde sounds.
Various trips to the studio where made between 1996 and 1998 resulting in the first release "I am, Thou art, They will".

"Ophiuchus - I am, Thou Art, They Will. A continuation of the ASTRAL project. I took those idea from a 4 track tape recorder into a proper, 16 track ADAT studio. Recorded in different session at the studio (Lobbes/1998). Certain parts where recorded at home. This was the first time i experimented with samples and computers. The ideas behind the music was very influenced by Necromantia (the use of only bass guitar + ritual nature of some tracks). Also of influences was avant garde black metal (Fleurity, Ved Buens Ende, Thorns etc.). For most of the tracks i recorded drums first, take them home and built tracks around them. Get back to the studio and record the parts. I wanted the weirdest combination of black metal, ritual music, electronics elements and non metal instruments. I also wanted the darkest atmosphere but also melody. The result was quite unique."

The concept of Imber Luminis is simply a catharsis of feelings about life, death, sorrow, pain, suffering and true melancholy. The new release, “Life as Burden“, contains 4 long tracks, including a cover song of the too well known song “Sick of it all” by the band FINGER ELEVEN, completely done with IL’s touch. Sometimes the keys are just short passages of classical piano, a thing that turns it into a trace of melancholy. Explosive passages would not fit into an album that should be regarded as melancholic, contemplative and depressive.
The riffs, hard, repetitive and slow. The thing that gives this album its authenticity are the vocal parts that were introduced. A combination of clean vocals and screams, very specific to depressive black metal. It’s a thing that you don’t encounter nearly as often, depressive black metal vocals and funeral doom, mixed.

All in all “Life as Burden” is a combination of low tones, rough riffs, authentic parts of funeral doom and melancholic sequences, lashed into a gloomy ambiance. It’s an album that takes your blackest thoughts out, an album that gives you suffering, pain and desperation, so that they’d reach the most obscure cells of one’s brain, it’s actually everything that couldn’t be said through “Fletus” : the dark part of our own feelings.

Mystagog was formed in 2006 by two well-known and genuine Hungarian underground musicians: Angmar the vocalist of Witchcraft, Hell and Diecold is responsible for the vocals and the drums while the guitars and the bass are handled by Grave (aka Thanatos) who can be familiar from the releases of Thy Funeral, Spüolus, 666 and Diecold. Now, there are many things you will like in this release, the whole structure of the songs, the artwork, the cheap low fi production. A low fi putrid sound... like it was recorded in a basement in some castle hidden somewhere in an Hungarian forest. And the voice... it fits like a glove into this necro wall of sound. It really gives you that stench of... old. Black metal is still alive!!!!!

One of the extreme metal/industrial underground's most unique bands, Gnaw Their Tongues arises again with a new album of majestic, orchestral death-terror called L'arrivée de la Terne Mort Triomphante, a series of five hymns to the death shroud, a celebration of dissolution. This Dutch one-man avant black/doom/industrial band is responsible for two of the most chilling albums of abstract heaviness to have been released in recent years (An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood and All The Grand Magnificence Of Perversity, both from Crucial Blast), but with this new full-length, Gnaw Their Tongues peels back additional layers of it's bombastic horror to reveal moments of euphonic beauty more than we've heard on the previous albums.

This is still harrowing stuff, though. The album opens with soaring choirs of the damned and a cacophony of tortured shrieks and demonic howling underneath a crushing, sludgy bass riff and pounding elephantine drumming, total blackened doom that's soon joined by peals of dissonant strings and softer droning cellos and violins. As you get deeper into " L'arrivée de la terne mort triomphante", there are moments of severe beauty that emerge, brief passages of fragile piano and mournful strings, the soft crackle of ancient vinyl grooves and French horns. These moments repeat throughout the album, lots of symphonic shadow that drifts amidst the pounding industrial blackness, but they never last for long as the spiraling woodwinds and cyclical piano figures inevitably become subsumed into the blasts of malevolent orchestral might. The fearsome martial drums and brass fanfares at the beginning of "Les anges frémissent devant la mort" eventually evolve into stretches of abstract industrial percussive pummel over droning strings and organ, and then into a stunning cinematic finale. That's followed by the clanking doom, swarming black buzz and sheet-metal cacophony of "La mort dans toute son ineffable grandeur/splendeur", the most industrial-sounding track on the album. "Le Chant De La Mort" is a lurching, blown-out death march that shifts into an infernal dubbed-out dirge, and the closing track " Le trône blanc de la mort (de white throne of death)" rumbles through funereal classical drift, waves of horns, strings, percussion surging into a series of dark, mournful shapes at first, but are then shattered by pounding doom metal drums and wailing choir voices, becoming an utterly grim blackened dirge with distorted shrieking vocals that are wracked with agony, ending the album with a suffocating atmosphere of death. At its heaviest, it's like funeral doom bathed in modern orchestral music, a cross between Penderecki and pitch-black doom filth, pulverizing and intensely evil.

...Picking up where 2008's An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood left off, Gnaw Their Tongues is back with nine new tracks of fearsome blackened orchestral chaos and abstract horror that still sounds like little else out there. On Dread, we're feeling an even heavier bass-assault compared to the other releases, and this is easily the heaviest Gnaw Their Tongues release yet. This monstrous, noxious bottom-end roar that skulks and slithers throughout the album suggests a foul fusion of Abruptum (which is still the closest reference point to Gnaw Their Tongue's black chaos) and Leonard Rosenman's most nightmarish film scores, piled in towering heaps of sadistic noise, warped orchestral strings, degraded samples, shrieking voices, and punishing lurching doom draped in suffocating atrmosphere. Hyper-abstract black metal sound-collage? Wagnerian avant-doom psychosis? That's one way of putting it, but Gnaw Their Tongues is ultimately impossible to pin down, defying simple categorization as this album plunges even deeper into a black pit of total cinematic horror, sexual perversion, and shapeless heaviosity....

The new full length (number two) from the Boston based avant-black/death/doom band Ehnahre, Taming The Cannibals, is one of the more cerebral and challenging "death metal" albums to have come through the Crucial Blast headquarters this year. After being turned on to their excellent debut from 2008 The Man Closing Up, I've been itching to hear more from these warped death abstractionists; their debut instantly dazed me with its jarring, alien approach to bestial slow-motion death metal, drawing heavily from the twelve-tone serialism of composer Arnold Schoenberg and the outer fringes of free-jazz and free improvisation as much as they do from the foul black pit of early 90's death metal and doom. Even after years of devouring the most dissonant strains of death metal that I could get my mitts on (Gorguts, Demilich, Immolation, Portal, etc.), these guys stunned me with their extreme chaotic dissonance and pitch-black chthonic textures, a combination of atonal 20th century classical music and vicious blackened death laced with squalls of free-jazz horns, stretches of intense choral ambience, and blasts of calcifying glacial doom...

A thunderous new disc from Korperschwache! Broken Blades Of Steel Scattered Across The Narrow Way detours from the blackened machine-pulse hypno dirges that have appeared on recent releases on Faunasabbatha, Inam, and Public Guilt, and delivers a slab of heavy, instrumental drone/noise rock that builds even further upon the heavy influence of classic late 80's/early 90's NYC noise rock (and especially Band Of Susans) that has been juicing Korperschwache over the past seven years with six tracks of dense billowing reverb, atmospheric hypno-riffs and supreme guitar squall. The Burzum/Abruptum-esque blackness of the Ourobouros series on Crucial Bliss is absent here, and instead the music emerges as a lumbering deformed cousin of classic alt-guitar noise, huge open chords unfolding over shimmering distorted strings and multiple layers of vibrating amplifiers, with some sweet sun-scorched melodies swimming around in these lengthy riff explorations. Of course, it wouldn't be Korperschwache without the jagged, pounding beats of Doktor Omega, and each of these mechanical jams uncoil over a battery of thumping machine beats, cymbal-soaked motorik rhythms and even the odd unexpected breakbeat that kind of sounds like some spastic jungle has suddenly ripped it's way through the swirling clouds of drone guitar...

The first new release from Marax since 2005...this is electronic/harsh noise by Eric Crowe, who in the past served as throat for the cult Southern grindcore band Social Infestation, who also featured future members of Mastodon and Withered. This full length has been in the works for several years and is only now crawling out into the light, but the wait has sure been worth it. This'll incite some serious zoneouts from anyone who dipped their skulls in the molten deathdrone of Marax's ultra-limited Love Of Death series...Black Veil has four lengthy tracks of heavy liquid nightmare distilled from the catacombs. The disc opens with the fuzzy muted swirl and distant percussive clang of "Returning To Rust", which moves through soft gauzy layers of crackling distortion until exploding in a churning wall of concrete-mixer crunch with heavily modulated, howling demonic vocals. "Inside The Inner Voice" is a seven minute exercise in pitch black ambience and malignant incantations, and "Bleeding Black" stretches out across a vast abyss of distant reverberations and ambient fuzz, filled with far-off sonic flutterings, metallic scraping and screaming voices that just barely heard, an intensely creepy ambient dronescape. And the final track "Nod" is a twenty-two minute headphone epic...this is one of my favorite Marax tracks, a threatening ambient film score piece that stretches way out and moves from huge slabs of growling black ambient drift and buzzing black metal guitar through epic celestial synthesizer riffs. Simple synth melodies are repeated over swathes of droning amp rumble, the low-end sometimes swelling up in huge waves that threaten to overwhelm the entire piece, and a beautiful little melody begins to take shape later in the track that sounds like it's being played on a heavily processed piano, repeating over and over. Later, the buzzing, fuzz-drenched sheets of blackened guitar and droning distortion come back in and the sound becomes a massive muted fuzzdrone that reaches out forever, finally fading off into the ether as the track comes to a close. I'd normally never describe any of Marax's material as beautiful since most of his works either suggest feelings of isolation and dread or simply shear your fuckin' dome off with extreme electronic skree violence, but with "Nod" Marax gives us one of the most mesmeric pieces of music I've ever heard from him, a sprawling, subtly beautiful narco-scape that's like hearing the mystical krautrock orchestrations of Florian Fricke and Popol Vuh faded and filtered through the deformed, dank dungeon atmosphere of Abruptum.

...This seven track disc is undeniably the heaviest music that AUN has created so far, a grinding, distorted soundscape that begins with the keening electronic drones and muffled, disembodied metallic riffing that becomes endlessly tanged in a nest of squirming low-end noise in the opening title track, and steadily ratchets up the heaviness with each track, until we come to the punishing "Palejoy", a bludgeoning Industrial metal dirge that has massive, Godflesh-like percussion fused to processed, almost synthetic sounding doom riffage, a black cloud of buzzing, ultra downtuned black dirge drifting over a muffled, slow motion breakbeat. In between, AUN erects vast walls of crumbling distortion and rhythmic guitar loops forged into apocalyptic ambient drift streaked with heavenly synth choirs and sweeping cosmic fx, crushing fifteen-minute blasts of immolating amplifier ragas formed from a nebula of melting woodwind sounds, distant elephantine tympani drums, hellish symphonies of rusted, scraping strings and celestial electronic whiteout that ends up sounding like something from Skullflower's Orange Canyon Mind but one hundred times heavier, and strange deep-space blues jam instrumentals with impossibly detuned guitar soaring through black holes of reverb and tape fluctuation.
This is seriously crushing stuff that stands out in sharp contrast to the hordes of amp-leaning feedback riders, and is highly recommended to anyone into KTL, Final, Black Boned Angel, To Blacken The Pages, K.K. Null, Aethnor, Fall Of The Grey Winged One, Fear Falls Burning, Hlidolf, Messiah Complex, and other heavy, textural industrial/ambient/sludge groups.

Wether is the blackened noise project from Mike Haley, the beardo that runs the classy Electric Human Project label and who is also half of Big China & Little Trouble...this entity has released an assload of cassettes and splits and even a wee bot if vinyl over the past couple of years, and all of it which I've heard has been excellent, a kind of formless, ganrled industrial blackness, usually very dirgey and crushing, possessed by the occasional blast of snarling black metal screams buried in distortion and awesomely malevolent synthesizer drones that, when they really get going, sound like the tarblack afterbirth of Wolf Eyes jamming on cues from John Carpenter's The Fog OST from '94. We finally hooked up with Mike to bring you this new full length of infernal hypnosis Uncertain Ritual, a collection of hellish mechanical atmospheres, meditative trance-loops constructed from machine clatter and blocks of white noise, torrents of bellowing distortion goo and black ambience that's creepy as fuck. This is super-high quality fx pedal/circuit-bent generated deathscape action, brutally heavy in spots with massive creeping industrial rhythms and whirlpools of ultra-distorted metal-like crunch, and tranquil and beautiful in others when Wether moves into placid drones and subdued underground vibrations. This is terminally evil shit though, and it falls somewhere in between the black ambient/industrial chaos of artists like Nordvargr and Abruptum, and the grinding electronic skum of Wolf Eyes and Anenzephalia.

With all of the highly stylized, heady music coming out from the American black metal underground right now (much of which is sounding less and less like anything that you'd actually call "black metal"), having Glass Coffin nail-gun your skull with it's gnarled, scumbag satanic thrash and drug/booze-addled hatred is a pleasant change of pace over here at C-Blast. Up till now, I've only come across a couple of releases from this one-man band; a split tape with Tombstalker, a Cd-r on Black Goat , a split 7" with maudlin necro droner Moloch. All of that stuff ripped, but Glass Coffin's ferocity and filthiness reached a fever pitch on the new album Remnants Of A Cold Dead World. When the band sent the recording to me earlier last year, it immediately tore my head off upon the first listen and replaced my worthless skull with a charred and smoking wooden cross jammed upside-down into the burnt stump.
This new full-length blast of ugly, low-fi black metal from Kentucky's Glass Coffin features ten tracks of dissonant minor-key dread and charred distortion injected into vicious punk-damaged blackness. Although he's probably better known for his previous work with the likes of sludgy noise rock beasts Cadaver In Drag, assorted black noise experiments under his own name, and as one half of the ambient noise duo Swamp Horse, this is no mere flirtation with black metal. Glass Coffin's garagey, fuzz-blasted black filth is fully fanged, a ferocious thrash attack that blends together lethal Hellhammer-influenced atavism, nail-gargling attacks on the Lamb and weak scum, eruptions of nuclear black noise, supremely shambling drumming, and a heavy hardcore punk influence combined with some whacked-out blues moves (and even some traces of blown-out Appalachian twang) that situates these songs somewhere in the same bent terrain of North American black metal between the likes of Tjolgtjar, Canis Dirus, and Blood Cult, and the violent blackened punk of Devil's Dung, Akitsa and Willing Feet. This is ugly, fucked-up music that celebrates murder, perversion, hatred and graveyard hallucinations - a new favorite of mine, for sure. Kill or be killed!
The disc is accompanied by a sixteen-page black and white art zine that's filled with Josh Lay's crude, blasphemous artwork of LSD-soaked intestinal regurgitation, amorphous heaps of Lovecraftian monstrosity, church burning, Baphometic demons with frozen rictus grins, and other charnel-pit visions, wrapped in a black-on-black obi-band. There's also a set of black and white vinyl Glass Cofin stickers, a lyric/info insert, and a set of two 1" buttons included in this set. Each copy comes in a clear dvd-style case, and is hand-numbered and released in an edition of two hundred copies.

Finally, after a pronounced delay, we're presenting the latest in grim, Cthulhian ambient death from David Reed, the man behind the Snip-Snip CD-R label and the ice-drones of Envenomist. With Luasa Raelon, Reed uses deep-frozen synthesizers and electronics to construct pitch-black sonic sculptures that evoke lost cities carved from obsidian whose masterless machines have been left to grind on into eternity, or descents into stygian pits whose bottoms cannot be gauged. Into The Void is the newest masterwork from Reed, recorded in 2006 and presented here as a five-chapter narrative that chronicles a doomed space exploration, where all that is left are the faint transmissions of apocalyptic dread drifting back at us through time. Beyond ominous, and gorgeously eerie, Reed continues to craft some of the blackest, heaviest drift this side of Gruntsplatter, Troum, Lull, Yen Pox, Melek-Tha, Lustmord, and Megaptera. Into The Void has been released in an edition of 200 copies, packaged in the signature Crucial Bliss foldover sleeve with the disc attached to the interior on a plastic hub, and featuring some of our best Bliss artwork yet, which David described as looking like 70's science-fiction art.

Previously known as Pussygutt, the duo of blackened psychedelic dronemetallers from Boise, Idaho changed their name to the much more ominous sounding Wolvserpent in 2010. The name is the really the only thing that changed, as the occult hypno-doom and grim, folk-stained nightmares that populated their previous albums are all intact here. This double disc from Crucial Blast collects both the Gathering Strengths Lp (Olde English Spelling Bee) and Blood Seed Lp (20 Buck Spin), both of which were previously available only on limited edition vinyl. The material has been remastered for this format, and comes in an eight-panel digipack that features both the original album artwork as well as new imagery that further compliments Wolvserpent's avant-garde witch-sludge...

Bathed In Sunlight is the breatakingly beautiful new full length from the longrunning Denver drone ensemble Encomiast, featuring five lengthy tracks of instrumental bliss from Ross Hagen and company that bring together slowly drifting drones speckled with shifting layers of angelic female vocal harmonies, lilting Loveless-esque melodies, ominous ambience floating over simple hand drum rhythms, dramatic dark pop with strummed acoustic guitars and Ross' deep crooning vocals...and more of the ghostly flute playing that has always set Encomiast apart from the rest of the drone/ambient underground. Fans of Encomiast's previous releases are going to be surprised when they hear songs like "Laughter In The Storm" , whose droning psychedelic folk is unlike anything that Ross has done before, a thoroughly entracing combination of droning electronics and brooding acoustic strum. And then there's the stunning finale "Evergreen", opening with gently acoustic guitar swimming in delay before a gorgeous female voice enters under a slight veil of distortion, like she's singing from the other end of a long distance phone call, the distortion then lifting revealing her voice in perfect clarity. A simple but perfect effect. The melody in this song is likewise simple but perfect, a melancholy hook that is gradually joined by drums and electronic drones as the song evolves, turning into a amazing piece of dreamy ambient post-rock pop. Fans of Encomiast's previous droneworks and the kind of evocative ambient rock that Temporary Residence is known for will LOVE Bathed In Sunlight, which travels the luminescent ley lines between ambient dronescapes, folk music, and post-rock.

One of several side-projects to emerge from the Wolvserpent camp, Aelter is the solo effort of Wolvserpent guitarist Blake Green. With Aelter, Blake explores a similar realm of dark majestic sound to Wolvserpent, with his massive downtuned guitar roar and bleak minor key melodies being the common thread between the two projects. But where Wolvserpent blends this chugging Melvins-esque heaviness and haunting slowcore arpeggios with violins, pounding drums, and a propensity for extended hypno-dirges, Aelter dispenses with the drums almost completely and goes for a more cinematic approach using layered keyboards and gorgeous harmonized voices that reminds me of something you would have heard on Beggers Banquet or 4AD being fused to a malevolent black heaviness. Both of the Aelter albums were only released on vinyl in limited editions of a few hundred copies and are close to going out of print completely, but we have now gathered both Dusk Dawn and Follow You Beloved together in a double disc set...

For nearly a decade now, the shadowy collective known as T.O.M.B. (or Total Occultic Mechanical Blasphemy) have been creating a particular brand of industrial death worship with some of creepiest recordings that I've heard out of this realm. I discovered the band through their 2007 album Macabre Noize Royale on Todestrieb, whose grating industrial rhythms, blasts of blackened noise and malformed black metal left my skull a charred husk, and I've been following their clandestine electro-acoustic experiments and rituals of corpse-abuse ever since. Now, T.O.M.B. have brought us their latest album (and first for Crucial Blast) UAG (or Undercovered Ancient Gateways, and it follows the group of crypt-crawlers through eleven tracks of suffocating black ambience and lifeless industrial pummel that strips away most of the black metal elements of previous releases, crafting a more abstract, ambient sound this time around...

After blazing trails with his "Denuntiatis Cinis" debut for MORIBUND and reaping unanimously fanatic praise from the international press, one-man maelstrom of miasmic misery HAERESIARCHS OF DIS returns with his hotly anticipated "In Obsecration of the Seven Darks". Taking the previous album to more epic and extreme ends, mainman Cernunnos summons forth a frightening and bold vision of black metal: the complexity more entangling, the experimental touches even further out there, the violence absolutely mesmerizing. HAERESIARCHS OF DIS now enters the uppermost echelon of black metal.

Chants and other symphonic touches are checked with guitar eruptions, as well as some accordion work by Gilles de Rais (not the serial killer from the Middle Ages, one would hope). Lyrics are filled with the occult and blasphemy and are arranged in classical structures such as movements, interludes, and etudes. Those into the harsher types of filthy Black Metal will relish the band’s overall assault, whereas those who prefer symphonic attacks or ambiance will dig some of the interludes found herein. A most impressive debut and one that is highly recommended.

Masterminded by the tortured soul who goes by the name of Lord Astaroth (guitar, voice), Dis crafts each Black Metal assault with all the subtlety of a chainsaw killer set loose in a sorority house, but there is an underlying groove to the madness that is most infectious. Tracks like “Chaos Plague”, “Wolfmoon” and “Manifestation” will leave you feeling like you have just barely survived a head-on collision with a fucking freight train. This is THE ONE. The essence of pure inspired ultra personal musical expression. Powerful and intense, blown out and buzz drenched, depressive and melancholic. Totally in the red, digital distortion, crumbling and furious. The vocals anguished wails and tortured howls, the drums simple programmed beats, weirdly clipped and processed, also wreathed in distortion, keyboards offering up more buzz and shimmer. Long stretches of creepy ambience, samples of speeches and warfare, of wailing weeping mothers and children, all woven into Pyha0s buzzing black tapestry. Total bedroom lo-fi production, but completely idiosyncratic and inspired. No blast beats or furious thrashing, instead, the tracks are either midtempo, or no-tempo, with some tracks eschewing drums all together, just a wall of ultra distorted riffage all tangled up with demonic howls. But it's not just howling and screeching, the vocals sometimes emerge as a weird wailing croon, other times as a hushed whisper, while other times a mumbled moan. In fact, a few of the tracks almost sound like some weird black metal Sebadoh, super lo-fi and dripping with distortion, the vocals weary and worn, buried beneath swirling squalls of blacknoise. Others have a distinct shoegaze quality too, that is if you can imagine a shoegaze Abruptum, the drums loping and laid back, the guitars washed out and blurred, the vocals SO distorted they swallow up all the other sounds and become another layer of super saturated sound. Sometimes they even morph into fucked up harmonies, so loud and lo-fi they crackle and splinter, without losing any of their alien beauty. There are long stretches of ambience too. Crackling campfires, crickets, warm whirring synths way off in the distance, ghostly gurgled disembodied voices, whipping wind, all interwoven with tape hiss and buzzing synths, creepy noises, and all manner of sonic detritus.

Complex and untypical song structures and unique bestial human vocals that is wrapped in an organic raw production. Almost an hour of a real black metal exception.

Yet another mysterious one man black metal horde, rising from the fertile SFBM underground. The scene that gave us Leviathan, Draugar, Crebain, Pale Chalice, Sutekh Hexen, Dead As Dreams, Dispirit, Horn Of Dagoth, Pandiscordian Necrogenesis, Amocoma, Elk, Necrite, Palace Of Worms, and more, has now spawned the oddly monikered Botanist, an odd moniker only until you realize that all the songs here are about plants and flowers, and all of the artwork following suit, old faded images of strange and wondrous flora and fauna, but that's not nearly the strangest thing about Botanist. Nope, the strangest thing would be the fact that there are NO guitars, and there is NO bass, just drums, vocals, and HAMMERED DULCIMER. That's right, eerie and esoteric, buzzing and baffling, drum and dulcimer driven black eco-terrorist black metal. And as strange as that may sound, the SOUND is even stranger, the dulcimer a particularly haunting and strangely melodic instrument, the typical black metal riffs replaced by maniacal dulcimer melodies, repeated motifs, flurries of cyclical notes, the sound buzzy and brutal in it's own way, with an almost old-timey feel to the sound, the drums mathy and intricate, often sounding strangely like a demonic drumline, the vocals a hellish raspy croak, but it's the dulcimer that drives the sound of Botanist, a distinctive metallic buzz that's eerily creepy and darkly cinematic, with many of these tracks sounding like they could be some alternate soundtrack for a lost seventies giallo or some super surreal art film.

The tracks are mostly short sharp blasts of metallic buzz, the dulcimer alternatingly offering up dense overtone-rich clouds of frenzied tangled melody, but just as often, unfurling stretches of haunting atonal shimmer, occasionally spacing way out, and weaving sprawling dreadscapes of minor key tension and slow build terror, the sound of the dulcimer so strange, sometimes evoking old pianos in ghost town saloons, other times impossibly melodic, with the songs on the verge of pure poppiness, or as poppy as something as twisted and confusional like this can be. The sound of Botanist is definitely black metal, in form, in structure, in intent, in spirit, even to a degree in sound, but it's also something wholly other, the relation between the rhythms and the melodic component of the dulcimer's haunting buzz and chiming metallic tone hard to quantify, and obviously even harder to accurately describe, then there's the dulcimer's traditional station as a folky Appalachian instrument, it all adds to the crazy, confusional appeal of Botanist's warped sonic world, one that manages to be both heavy and buzzy and blackened, but also haunting and hypnotic and strangely soundtracky, a swirling, hazy, chaotic sound, densely melodic, relentlessly rhythmic, fantastically fucked up and bafflingly brilliant. The discs are housed in super swank full color mini-lp gatefold style Stoughton jackets, with a thick booklet of lyrics, the jacket and booklet both printed to look like an antique botanist's field journal. It is hard to find any negative aspects in Krohm's first album. This music is among some other depressive black metal offerings that have created so thorough and mystically rich material that any definition to certain genre "black metal" isn't at all necessary. This music just happens to use many elements and key instruments of black metal. Alongside Xasthur's greatest achievements (for example songs like Telepathic With the Deceased and the instrumental version of Suicide in Dark Serenity) Krohm is musical brilliance from the darkest depths of human existence. And yet Krohm sounds totally personal without any clear pointings to any other band or project out there. Krohm and A World Through Dead Eyes are that remarkable.

On side A there is only one track and the track is a Moloch "Depressive Visionen eines sterbenden Horizonts" taken from "Isolation der Essenz" album 2010 and then re-mastered in 2012 special for this split by Tom "Nuh" Owen. As a result - track began to sound like a whole piece, sound a softer, smoother and has been reduced by bass 'outro' (the track was shortened by 1 minute, unlike the original). Track still in harsh, suffocating, cold style of Moloch. Primitive guitar riffs that made a Burzum-like atmosphere, good audible bass, raw drums and desperate screams - this is Moloch in the purest form.

Side B have a 2 tracks. First track is a blackend speedcore mix of Moloch track "Ljosalfaheimr" (taken from album "A journey to the Vyrdin" 2008) made by Yudlugar. From the original екфсл structure there was only screams and guitars that were mutilated in a chaotic manner, and again re-mixed into one piece. Mix has turned sick and totally unpredictable, and at the same time, the ideal that flows into the atmosphere of Yudlugar works. Closed side B by second track - own Yudlugar track written, performed & recorded by James Hill (experimental musiciant from Usa) and its a pure speedcore without any other elements. Hard, harsh and chaotic structure of track with very sick distorted voices on background.

Vinyl were released by Legs Akimbo records - small underground label from United Kingdom that focuses mainly on unstandart experimental music, speed core, noise... And this release was the first of the genre of Black Metal in label roster.

Vulture Industries is a band from the capital of black metal, Bergen. You haven't heard of them? Wrong! They aren't a KVLT band with 2 demos! "Demented Quality" is a term that fits this young avant-garde group.

The cover of the album resembles a man strangling himself. The lyrics bring in play the monologue of a mentally disturbed man filled with hatred towards society (conformity, morality) and aware of his own "demons"(???). If you think this is crazy, you haven't heard the music! "The Dystopia Journals" is a blend of complex progressive structures, black metal, synth, symphonic (cello, viola). The drumming is decent and it contains a lot of double bass, even a few blast beats. The vocals range from: clean (somewhere between baritone and bass), monologue to shrieks and growls. They are completely amazing and really highlight the album. I can't think of an album with such versatile and good vocals as it even surpasses Fernando Ribeiro's performance on "Wolfheart ".

Basically the album contains mostly riffs that are at the same time melodic, heavy, complex and catchy (weird). They are often accompanied by the synth or by the unconventional for metal instruments i mentioned before, the music also being very non-repetitive and mostly fast paced. THANKFULLY the tracks also contain "sparks". Some songs like: "Blood Don't Flow Streamlined", "The Benevolent Pawn", "Grim Apparitions" contain excellent guitar solos. There's a moment on "To Sever the Hand of Corruption" where the melody fades away and pure black metal comes into play. Similar moments in "Soul Cage" and "The Crumbling Realm". It's great that you never know what kind of vocal to expect. The album really plays with your mind. When thinking about this album have in mind a more aggressive Age of Silence or an Arcturus with better vocals.

You will probably end up more crazy than the main character after listening to this! Heh, but that's good! I want the second album!

So this oil based piece of blackened vinyl has the 10 regular new LP tracks in all its mayhem, heaviness and gloom. Coming from Barcelona / Spain, ETACARIANE feature some well known faces from the likes of LEADERSHIT and DISFACE who usually know how to twist blasting Crust out of their instruments... BUT, this ETACARIANE go some step forward and are much more interesting and diverse than a plain clone of the typical Spanish downtuned D Beat... this is far more old school and punk rock with the kick ass factor set up very high...Good one...

A great release fully loaded with truly high quality apocalyptic/atmospheric doom by this Spanish band. The sound fairly difficult to pin down but they have a strong experimental side to their sludge, doom and post hardcore sound. Mostly screamed vocals are given the perfect counterpoint by some beautiful ambient sections and there are some real surprises here like the use of brass and clean piano in parts. Well worth checking out. This CD contained 6 tracks in 56 minutes of incredibly decent recording with engrossing epic experience.

The whole album seems to go for a doom-black approach musically, which suits the lyrics and album title perfectly, reeking of alcohol and sadness like a lonely Saturday night when a bottle of beer and a guitar are your only companions. There's this constant aura of despair mixed with insanity which makes for an interesting listen. Especially during the numerous moments in which the piano takes the spotlight and plays something spooky. This doesn't mean this is a quiet, slow and doomy album, there's plenty of black metal action which tends to be epic and sorrowful most of the time, with ever increasingly improved vocals and musicianship.
